The days of 22 hours a day clubbing have long gone from Ibiza. The local authorities a few years ago decided it was better that a certain times of the day clubbers actually when to bed and stopped scaring the local children (fair enough). The daytime scene (although restricted), is however slowly making a come back. San Jose and Playa den Bossa have slightly different rules which mean they can push it a little more.
Ocean Beach recently opened its Tuesday ‘Deepflight’ parties with none other than Sister Sledge. When I was out the other Saturday I was lucky enough to hang out with the band – officially cool guys (why wouldn’t they be)! Ocean Beach is just around the bay in San Antonio, it’s kind of going for the Ushuaia of San An vibe – basically bringing poolside music and entertainment outside once again but without the stern hard knock security guards with the ‘I’ve killed a man’ look in their eyes. You can catch me playing there most Monday and Friday afternoons.
Bora Bora is as usual on the ‘to do’ list this summer. My mate Lucky is working hard there (and succeeding) in keeping the place well and truly on the Playa den Bossa map. With so many venues, bars and events going on, it’s no mean feat but they’ve upped the ante this season with some great guests and some of the busiest days and nights they’ve ever had. Alex and Heath the main residents there know exactly how to keep the place jumping and it’s full credit to them for keeping a freshness there even after all these years.
Blue Marlin is kind of the opposite to both the afore mentioned venues – not really my cup of tea to be honest. Well that and that cup of tea would probably need a mortgage supporting it. I played there recently, lovely place, without a doubt a ‘classy’ vibe, but I just couldn’t help feeling like I wasn’t meant to be there. Maybe that’s the point. Maybe it’s the sort of place people are supposed to aspire to get into and I’m with Grouch Marx – “I wouldn’t want to be a member of any club that would have me as a member”.
